So I'm thinking of making a bunch of fabric gift bags for the etsy store. preferably something that is appropriately festive without screaming CHRISTMAS!!!!

But I'm having trouble deciding what style to use (I only wanna do 2 kinds, tops). So here are the options:

1) The ones I HAVE been making (lukewarm response but they weren't holiday oriented). Usually, they don't have an applique.

2) Candy Wrapper style:

3) Drawstring, with extra fabric at the top:

(I love that plain cotton twill tape they use for the bows)

4) Drawstring, no fabric at the top:

5) With handles (though the idea is that people won't have to use any additional packaging like tissue paper.... maybe I could add ribbon at the top to tie the bag closed but that might be a little too much ribbon...) . These would be easiest if I wanted to add designs on the front though...

Thoughts? Also, how do we feel about wine bottle gift bags?

I don't often think of strangers having an impact on my life, but every so often, I come face to face with the fact that I owe a ginomous debt of gratitude to someone I don't know and will never meet. I knew interracial marriage was forbidden in the US at some point, but it wasn't until I took a social policy class in grad school that I realized that it was less than 50 years ago. I have bronchitis. But aside from that life is good. I didn't fail any of my classes last semester (if you saw how little work I did, you'd realize this is quite an accomplishment) and the apartment is coming along. Laney's also in a much more playful mood (maybe Princeton was depressing her too) and she's definitely lost some weight - you should see her jump for that cat dancer.

Yup, the sewing continues. In addition to making salsanchips a knitting needle case for her birthday, I've made the following:

I'm pleased with how the sewing and inside pockets came out, but the dimensions are kinda off, but I totally nailed that zipper.

Well, one month (and an embarassing amount of fabric - mostly donated/ scavenged) later, I've actually sewing something(s). sanaenam was right, it is SO not like Knitting. Particularly since our tiny apartment doesn't afford a permanent workspace for a sewing machine and related accoutrements so you gotta plan for at least 30 min for setup and cleanup. But anyways, I've only made one thing so far that was wholly unusable and that was largely because I was using the wrong type of interfacing. So far, I've made a

So you know how I went to NOLA for a week? And I was feeling like there was nothing I could do to help? I decided, that what I could do was help the local economy - specifically small businesses. So I hit up a couple yarn stores. First one was Quarter Stich in the French Quarter, which was adorable and had lots of yummy stuff arranged by color. There, I got 2 skeins of Koigu in a purple/gray colorway.

Then I went to Garden District Needlework which is the single largest yarn store I have ever seen, and has not a sale bin (or even 5 sale bins) but a sale ROOM. Unfortunately I only noticed it on my way out, but it still made me hyperventilate. The 2 older ladies working there were just as nice as can be... and total enablers :)
There I got to feed my new habit for sockweight yarn scarves.

In other news, Knitters for Choice rocked out at the Women's Medical Fund Haunted House, and made $340. Which is beyond awesome cuz that's a lot for one sale, plus it totally inspired me to get cracking on some projects for K4C to sell at the Punk Rock Flea Market.

So here are a few things I've been working on. First up, 2 bags.
is made from leftover Kureyon from a sweater I made last year and needs a button.

is made from leftover Lamb's Pride bulky, which for some reason didn't felt uniformly even though they're all the same yarn, just in different colors. That one needs a zipper.

I'm also almost done with ... I can't decide if the colors are really ugly or really cool, either way, it'll probably float someone's boat. The most random things always do. More later on a sweater I'm working on and an action shot of me wearing the purple shawl to come...
